And I Think To Myself

MainSqueeze

Sonz and I accomplished a long-time goal on Sunday: we finally made it to the Main Squeeze Orchestra's Christmas Concert Holiday Extravaganza.

What is the Main Squeeze Orchestra? you may be asking.  Oh, just the Western World's Only 14 piece All-Female All-Accordion Orchestra.  Just that.

The concert extravaganza was a fun time.  The ladies performed some Christmas classics (Carol of the Bells, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Baby It's Cold Outside), covered Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" and some of Yann Tiersen's "Amelie" songs, did a surprisingly beautiful version of "Ave Maria," and threw in a rousing rendition of "Hava Nagila" for good measure.

In between songs, each girl shared how she had come to join the orchestra.  It seems that most of them were strong-armed into it by the orchestra's founder, an irascible German named Walter - owner of Main Squeeze Accordions on the Lower East Side - who conducts shop business with a Guinness in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

What a wonderful world.
